: : Anyone remember Cheap Charlie, the guy who used to roll the carriage around the projects selling old stuff and candy, well, cheap.

: : Every once and an while my kids, 6 and 5, ask me to tell them (again) the "Cheap Charlie Story."

: : Basically, some kids were harrassing Charlie endlessly, and he lashed out at (innocent, unaware me) by punching me in the nose. I remember his "mushy" fist planted sponge-like on my nose. No physical pain, but a lesson in something or other. I'll have to ask my kids in a few years what the lesson was.

: :How can we ever forget Cheap Charlie, he had all the greatest candy tat we never want OUR kids to ever eat. While we are at it does anyone remember the Knish man that also walked through the projects or even the Chow-Chow Truck Chinese food

I remember him: He had thinning but dark hair, a
grizzle, dark clothing (a baggy coat) and a beaten-up
baby carriage with junk in it. I once bought some
multicolored candy from him.

I also remember the knish man very fondly. I would rate
his knishes over Mrs. Stahl's, Hirsch's or other
pretenders. Even the salt granules were superior.
The last time I saw anyone like the knish man, or
bought a knish of that ineffable quality, was in the
Lower East Side of Manhattan, about ten to fifteen
years ago. There was a knish man pushing a cart just
like the one of old. MMMMMMMMMM. I might go down there
sometime and search for him, and hope he's still there.

Anyone remember the Famous Restaurant on Eastern
Parkway? No one could beat their pre-dinner rolls.
And my favorite dish (see my lost & found bio) was
vegetable cutlet and kasha with mushroom gravy.
The last time I ate this superb dish was at another
Famous Restaurant in Boro Park about six years ago.
Unfortunately, that one closed down a year after.
