Neighborhood Maps and Apartment Floorplans
Contributed by Larry Ginsberg
In more than three decades working for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA,) I have held numerous titles, beginning with that of Trainee. I entered Housing in September 1973 as a trainee to become a Maintenance Man (in today's politically correct world that title is Maintenance Worker.) I trained for five years, finally becoming a Maintenance Man and then, two years later, a Supervisor. In the years that followed I was promoted to Superintendent and finally Administrative Superintendant, a position I hold today. As Executive Assistant to a member of the Executive Department and a long-time employee who grew up in the projects of East New York (Pink Houses), I know public housing well. The plans linked here are used by NYCHA employees as maps. They refer to them when giving directions to contractors or making quantitative assessments (when it must be determined, for instance, how many closets are in a particular apartment or building or even the entire development.) They are a helpful tool to the worker but also to original kids who lived there --that being you. You can now reflect back on your home, one that was decent, clean and yes, even affordable to your parents.
