Mark Derr was born in Baltimore, raised in central Florida, and educated at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of Some Kind of Paradise, a critically acclaimed social and environmental history of Florida, and The Frontiersman: The Real Life and Many Legends of Davy Crockett. His articles have appeared in Atlantic Monthly, Natural History, Audubon, and many other magazines. He lives with his wife, Gina Maranto, in Miami Beach.
