Just found the website and found it interesting. My name is Yvette Treubig (Chait) and I currently live in Bayside NY. I lived in East New York until 1973. Attended PS 306 and lived across from George Gershwin handball courts and behind the old Sunnydale farms(the one with the cows). Looking forward to exploring the website for old times. Thanks Yvette Treubig

Steve Lang here. Glad to see the site back up. Sorry to see that the miscreant is at it again. Pam, please do not let the idiot get to you. We wind up losing the site for an extended period of time. Better to put our efforts into locating him or her. When we do, I may be able to deal with it through the court system.

I am Andrea Nadel, currently of Orange, Ct. I lived at 187 Wortman Ave, Apt 6E from 1958-1973 (P.S. 213, 306 and JHS 166). I'm looking for anyone who might have known me or my brother, Steven. Over the years in that building, I knew Stasi Ehrlichman (already found her), Debbie and Fran Hall, Michelle Shapiro, Karen Hankin, Larry and Steven Adelman, Irwin Fine, Denise Langer, as well as many others from around the neighborhood.

Do you? I think we should start up a petition or something protesting this. What do you think? Go to the below website and check it out. It's unbelievable!!!http://www.license.shorturl.com/

Message to Steve Lang: Steve, I cannot believe you found the graffiti you created. I must confess that through the years I placed my own graffiti, especially my initials, in various places in ways I viewed as permanent and indestructible. I even wrote my initials in wet cement on Wortman Avenue one day when they were fixing the street. The day I moved --though I did not say good-bye to all my friends-- I took a tour of the neighborhood to make sure all my imprints were in place and deep and dark enough to last at least centuries. When I went back to visit in 1998 I looked for all my markings --I honestly expected them to be there. But they were ALL gone --even the initials I had put in wet cement, and which I passed on the way to George Gershwin JHS every day. I want to learn the Steve Lang method of Graffiti so that, should it ever be called for again, I will do a better job. Hey, it's never too late.

Hi everyone. I'm glad that the Lost and Found site is back up and running, and that each message will be moderated. I lived in ENY from 1945-65, at 546 Snediker Avenue. I presently live in Commack, New York. I went to PS 190, Gershwin and graduated from TJHS, class of '63. I'd like to hear from former classmates. Hi, this is Susan Rose from 359 Wortman Avenue. I am now living in Albuquerque, NM. Just wanted to say hi to my old friends and neighbors from the old neighorhood. Last month I took a ride through the old neighborhood with Gary Prottas, and we actually walked into the building where we grew up. We met a few friendly people that let us in. And, two weeks ago I became a grandmother for the first time, to Evan Michah Cohen. He is adorable!! Many of us are grandparents now, my goodness, have the years gone by

Steve Lang here. I'm glad the lost and found is back. I was in the neighborhood lat week end. Bella Pizza is gone. The graffiti on the corner of the stores at Stanley and Van Siclen has faded away to nothing. The flag circle looked so much smaller than I remembered. But the neighborhood was really clean and the projects and private homes were well maintained.

I once traveled in the south with an african american friend of mine and we were watching T.V. on the news we saw a disturbance at a KKK rally. There were protstors and supporters hurling epithets and expletives which finally turned tto violence. I voiced my opinion about what i had seen, strongly, and was met with avery interesting response My friend said and I quote " we take theese retards too seriously" I asked what he would do he said just ignore them and they will go away. He reminded me it always takes two to tango. So please everyone lets heed some good advice here and go back to business as usual. How is everybody!!

I have been signing on to this beloved ENY site since its inception. I enjoy hearing about you, your families and our ENY. I am disgusted, repulsed and just plain annoyed at ALL those who seem to be using this site as some sort of confessional. I love you, your memories and your stories. I LOVE my ENY. But PLEASE use a little discretion. I need not know about your sexual preferences. I need not know with whom you shared spit and then some. Tell me about your memories, who you keep in touch with and when our next reunion is. I wish you and our world peace.

Steve Lang here. As someone who truly enjoyed re-connecting with ENY thru the web site, I also dislike the garbage I've seen posted lately. I am not, however, prepared to stop posting to or visiting the site. What I do is read the garbage when I want to do something akin to watching cartoons. Otherwise, I ignore it. I hope others follow suit so that the web site remains an overall source of enjoyment for us (PS- I know I'll be getting nasty e-mails and will be the subject of "garbage" posts. Unfortunately, the same classless terrorists who roamed our neighborhood those many years ago, have found a way to surface once again, like poisonous, sickly weeds that grow through the cracks in cement. Nature has yet to exterminate these defects, and so we, the good people of East New York, must once again put up with these rancid, rank, offensive, selfish, foul, fetor. It's not good enough that in this era modern of technology, where the scum of the earth can find homologous sites to digitally mis-communicate, that they still feel compelled to issue their reign of terror and sticky ejaculant on us. Yecch!

What has happened to our ENY site!? What used to be a place to catch up and communicate, has now become a cesspool, where aging lowlifes continue to spew their adolescent, self-perceived, machismo. As kids, we dreaded you crossing our paths because we recognized that you were the underbelly of the old neighborhood. And now, some 35 years later, you attack our new neighborhood with your (still) unresolved venom. Go find another place to play and, finally, leave us all alone!

I went to George Gershwin and Thomas Jefferson. For someone who only cut out one day at Metrick's I got married very young. Who remembers S and V and Jungle Judy? Ira Weasal's post must be an April Fool's joke. All the tough Jews he claims to have hung out with in the circle were actually members of Murder, Inc., a Brownsville gang. All of the guys listed in Weasel's post were dead many years before the circle came into being. There were, however, a lot of tough Jews (and Italinas and Irish and Hispancis and Balcks) that hung out at the circle. Some not so tough ones too, some good athletes, some bad ones, some smart kids, some dummies, etc. & etc. The mix made our ENY what it was: an extraordinary place to grow up.

Let's get a couple of things straight.First, I did NOT start all the shit about NLB. Read the message board. I posted what I said on the Lost & Found because I couldn't get the post onto the message board. Second, I am not supporting any of the violence that was done by the gangs, but it was 30 years ago! Third, my comments about not using real names was addressed to "Your Worst Nightmare" who said the most disgusting things and doesn't have a profile or email address attached, yet he seems to know a lot about the neighborhood. I am not going to respond to any more of the comments about this subject.

Ed Lichtenstein and Danny Goldwasser! Now there's 2 names out of the archives! Nice to hear from you guys and thanks for coming to my defense but really, don't kill poor MANMUFF1 because he didn't care what I wrote. That's his prerogative (although Mr. MANMUFF1 that was in pretty poor taste). Growing up in the projects, it's going to take a lot more than that to insult me. Hope all is going well with you guys. Danny, sorry to hear about your dad's passing. He was a real mensch and a cool person to work for. When Sandy Yoelson appointed me head lifeguard I asked Sandy for a raise and he not so politely showed me the way out of his office. I took it to your old man and my increase was in the mail the next week! On another subject, I was reading down below about Ms. Pilchman (the infamous Gershwin typing teacher that was a legend in her own mind) and everyone's experience in her class. Well here's one that ranks right up there...I think it was 7th grade and we had her in the afternoon right after lunch. It was already May, the weather was nice, we were all restless and of course no one paid much attention to her. On this particular day it was warm outside and inside, and the class was well out of control (probably a Friday) to the point where guys were pulling keys off the typewriters and shooting them at the board. Ms. Pilchman took the long 8ft. wooden pole to open the top windows which she yanked as far down as she could. She put the pole down and walked to the door. At the same time Steven Kessler picked the pole back up and promptly chucked it out the top of one of the open windows right on to Van Sicklen Ave. All we heard was the sound of glass shattering, and the cops were up there in about 5 minutes but no one got in trouble. Meanwhile Pilchman didn't have a freakin' clue as to what just happened. She was too busy singing to herself.

I have been reading this site for weeks and thought it was time to respond. I remember those days of horror dealing with the gangs. I also remember them coming into the circle on Fridays going through our pockets for money. Also remember them asking for protection money and running dances to get up enough money to get their buddies out of jail. As far as Gershwin is concerned, I remember Mr. Dubin taking pictures with camera during tests, then when he failed you, he showed you the pictures as the reason. He also had pictures uo in the back of the room. Remember Mr. Newton,Mrs. Schnapp (English) we locked her chair in the clothes closet,Mrs. Gillman (social studies) who used to look out the window and smile and many other teachers.

I've been reading this website for a few months, but I never really had anything to say until today when I saw that "MANMUFF" comment on Joel Shankman(a name I haven't heard in over 30 years)and the few reactions to it. You see, I grew up in the Lyndenwood homes but I hung out in ENY because my father, Adolph ran the ENY "Y". Joel Shankman and I went to sleep away camp together at the age of 10. He was an airplane nut then. Joel worked for my father as a lifeguard and at the end the Head Lifeguard who closed the doors forever on the Y pool as we knew it when the Y shut down. He was an excellent swimmer, a better diver and one hell-of-lifeguard and nice person. My father and I had the utmost respect for him because he was the easiest guy to get along with. Joel, if you should you read this...you're awesome dude! To see that you not only followed your childhood dream, but are doing a service to our country with your lifelong talents makes me proud, and if my dad were still alive he'd be the first to give you a KUDOS!! Hey, "MANMUFF"...is "MUFF" short for "muffin" or is this just your proclamation that you have a muff where your manlihood should be?

To that "Manmuff" character, I sincerely hope that you don't work as a Judge or a District Attorney because you obviously like to hang people without even knowing them! I can name about 200 people who would care very much about "that Joel character" if they knew about this website! Joel was one of the most popular and likeable people in the neighborhood during the time we grew up there, and if you knew him you'd probably care as well. Just because you didn't know him don't go bad mouthing him or anyone for that matter who wishes to put a message here! If you read further down below, this guy took his childhood hobby and is now utilizing his it on a lfull scale to help secure our country and save American lives, so as far as I'm concerned he can print what ever the hell he wants to. You should be a little more considerate.

He and Mr. Romanski ran the after-school center), 5th Grade Mrs. Baron (She had a lame left foot and walked with a limp, but she was a real nice lady and a good teacher), and 6th Grade was Mrs. Spitzer. To all my fellow ENY neighbors from 1967 - 1973 who lived in the Linden Projects across the street from Gershwin and those who lived in the Boulevard Projects along Schenk Ave facing Gershwin, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for waking you all up each and every Saturday & Sunday morning by flying my model planes on the softball field along Stanley Ave. at 8AM religously! As it turns out that might not have been such a bad thing, as I've never lost my love for airplanes. I've been with the Boeing Company (formerly McDonnell Douglas) for over 23 years now. I'm a Senior Design Engineer for the C-17 Military Airlifter, and I'm presently in charge of all retrofit activities on this plane during OPERATION-ENDURING FREEDOM. I get to travel to all the US Air Force Bases where the C-17s are assigned as they come back from the Middle East and certify any and all repair/retrofit work needed so these aircraft can be redeployed as quick as possible (pretty cool shit)! Al Durant - thanks for the tribute about about my "artwork" on the desktop at Jeff (actaully that was in Mrs. Satlow's English class, and I really was bored to death). Paul Kesten - Please resend me your e-mail address. I was in San Antonio last week (Kelly AFB) when I got your letter, but couldn't respond (Stupid Firewall). Cary Padell <Cary.Padell@dep.state.fl.us>
Orlando, FL USA - Friday, March 29, 2002 at 08:44:23 (CST)
Speaking of bullies, does anybody remember Ralphie and his gang - he once came by the hangout on Cozine Ave. near the Linden Houses and rounded up all the guys, away from the girls, and told us we would get our a's kicked if we were fraternizing with blacks, I was smiling since my rock and roll band had a black bass player at the time, Hilton Heyliger (who died young), and someone came up to me later and told me it was a good thing Ralphie did not see me smiling, or it would have been the end for me. So the old tensions were there, and sometimes flared up, but we all know it was a tough neighborhood. Good training for the real world. Regards to all, Ed Langer

While I do agree whith what Michele Shipp wrote (below), I must point out that Louie Scarantino (aka Crazy Louie) was a bully who did assault people with a bunch of other bullies backing him up. I say this from a personal experience in which I was badly injured from a blow to the head from Louie, while the others crowded around me and held my arms. Surely Michele, you do not condone this type of crime. P.S. I have used my real name and e-mail address. I will be happy to discuss this with you Michele.

I attended Gershwin from 1963 through 1966. One of my fondest memories was having Mr. Victor Watarz for science for 2 years. One day he was using the slide projector. It was dark in the room & the light from the projector shone on his face. Someone in the back of the room cracked up & yelled out, "You look like Dracula!" Mr. Watarz good-naturedly replied, "You mean that you didn't realize I looked like Dracula when you first walked into my class?!" About the gym teachers, Mr. Siegel & Ms. Hochberg (or was it Hochdorf?), when we were at the segment of the semester where we learned "social dancing" & they opened up the wall between the boys' & girls' gym, those two teachers really did a provocative demonstration of a slow dance! So maybe there was some validity in the rumors which circulated. Anyone remember Mrs. Smits always saying, "Go around the arrow!" during passing? Heaven help anyone who simply crossed over the white line that ran down the corridors so that students stayed to their right like their lives depended on it if Mrs. Smits happened to be present! I saw her grab plenty of non-compliant kids by the collar. Today the kids would be grabbing HER by the collar. This is an awesome website! I'd love to hear from some of my old friends. Regards to all...

Reading about all the old teachers got me thinking of some stories, there was one I will never forget with Mr. Skolnick of Gershwin, who was due to marry Mrs. Schorr, who was my 7th grade home teacher and math teacher and who was great. But Skolnick was a little crazy, one time Skolnick tried to get order in myclass (he was visiting Ms. Schorr's class) so he yelled out to the class - "Are you done ?" meaning were we through making noise, but one kid yelled back "then wipe yourself" and got taken out of the class by Skolnick and beaten up.. needless to say Schorr did not marry Skolnick, and do you remember the name of the kid who got beat up .....? write me for the answer... I remember Harry (Igor) Sfarti (correct spelling)i had him a few times as a substitute teacher during the early 70's in Gershwin. Everyone yelled out EEEEEEE-GOR when they saw him pass by in the hallways or when he turned his back in the classroom. It really was a pity how everyone tortured him, even though he was a little bit unhip an unkempt. Does anyone know if he is still alive???. But think about it, middle school is tough on anyone, including the teachers. We were not angels, I wouldn't doubt if they feared for their lives in that neighborhood. Here I go again .... I had Mrs. Pilchman for official class in 7th grade, 1962-63, and remember her quite well. One day, during official class, she taught us the words to a bizarre song she wanted us to sing. The words? "Judy drop dead...dum...dum...Judy drop dead". I kid you not. You don't forget things like this. The door to our classroom was wide open, and she smiled from ear to ear as we loudly sang the words she had taught us. It really wasn't much of a song, though, since there was no melody. And I never found out who this "Judy" was. Another teacher there, perhaps? However, I have no doubt that Mrs. Pilchman was excellent typing teacher. And she treated her students with respect. I remember that she was assigned to teach us about New York State, and did a good job. So, she was basically a good teacher with some.... er....shall we say....quirks.

A minor correction to my comments about Bash (I won't refer to him as Mister anymore, that would be according him too much respect). The little army that General Bash was in charge of at PS 213 was the Student Patrol, and that's where he directed most of his energy during the school day. He would appoint one of us as a class "monitor" on a daily rotating basis (what a feeling of power!), and then disappear for hours at a time. What a jerk! I guess anyone could be a "teacher" in those days.

I have a Mr. Bash story that I would like to share which pretty much sums up the kind of asshole that he was (and probably still is if he is still alive). I was in his 5th grade class in 1960. One day I casually mentioned to my mother that he was a lousy teacher, wasn't teaching us anything, and spent most of his day with his paramilitary unit, the school crossing guards. Unbeknownst to me, she decided to come to school the next day and confront him with my allegations directly. Of course, I swore up and down that I had said no such thing to my mother, but it was too late. My punishment for this indescretion? He made me write "I will not talk" 500 times while the rest of the class got to watch a movie in the classroom next door. That illustrates as well as anything the kind of person that he was. A true blue moron.

I really laughed at the characterizations of Pitler, Bash, etc. Was Mrs. Smits the one from Gershwin who used to cry 'INATTENTIVE!' when she caught you with your mind drifting? (That was me most of the time.) But no one was in Pitler's league. Also, I remember the candy store across from 213. I used to be a 'door monitor' at the northeast entrance across from the candy store. I would accept candy kickbacks in exchange for allowing kids to leave the school to buy candy during lunch hour. So easily corrupted...

Just wanted to inform you of the passing of my father Robrt at age 74 on November 23, 2001. He lived at 240 Wortman Apt. 1C then 570 Stanley Apt.2G. He didn't want to pay two fares, so he walked us down to the VanSiclen #2 train station (pre-1968), then to the Pennsylvania Ave Station (1968-1974), And if you want the teacher from he**, try Mrs. Malamud from PS306. I had her from 1968-9. If you want to see what se looked like, watch the "Frosty The Snowman:" cartoon in the first scenes where the classroom takes place. Peace,' Alicia

Mr Green was head of the crossing guards. DOes anyone recall those drills where we had to duck under our desks with our tiny butts to the window in case of nuclear attack. Those were scary times. Yeah, P.S. 213 was quite an experience! When I was in the 5th grade, my teacher - kindhearted Mr. Stein - retired in January, and Mr. Bash took over. The entired class cringed for the rest of the term. Does anyone remember Mrs. Gross? She was wonderful. I actually look forward to going to school when she was my teacher. As for my third-grade teacher Miss Weiss, she tormented me for an entire year and it took me a long time to recover from that experience. When I think of Mr. Green, though, I have to smile at the great memories. Regards to all of my friends out there!

Mr Bash was a horrible man, as a little kid he was frightening to us. I think he might have been the evil son of Frau Pitler. My favorite teacher was Mr Rachlin. I was in his class and also the A.V squad. We had to lug around these tremendous movie projectors and speakers. But we got excused from class. I think if Frau Pitler and Herr Bash reproduced it would result in Little Dr Mengele. What a frightening thought

I happened upon the ENY site by accident. It is very interesting though it appears to me that most of the people who are discussed are about 5-10 years older than I am (I am now, in January of 2002 approaching my 43rd birthday).
